The only people who can see unicorns are the virgin maidens, because, they are a symbol of purity. I think our world doesn't care about purity, beauty or truthfulness. The unicorns have lost their place in this world and that's why the wolf (symbol of bad intentions) can steal the unicorn's fabulous horn and use it for his own profit to lie to the world.
The fallen unicorn is alone, hurt and no one care for her except for one person, that is, the maiden. And I think that is why the unicorn only showed herself to the maiden, because she knew that in the end, the maiden would be the only one left even if the unicorn would lose all fascination in the eyes of the world.
There remains hope, for the maiden will forever protect the extinction of the unicorn, unless the maiden herself disappears.
